Don’t pay too much attention to the picture if you are trying to avoid see-through underwear and shopping on the web. The name of the fabric used is generally more useful. The fabric most often used to create sheer nightgowns and other lingerie is chiffon, but you may also see georgette, double georgette, tulle and organza. All are sheer fabrics. Lace can be quite revealing depending on the pattern, and the sheer sex appeal of bare skin behind rare black lace cannot be over-stated. Charmeuse and satin are invariably opaque, but describing a garment as ‘cotton’ or ’silk’ tells us nothing about its transparency.

Cotton is almost always viewed as an opaque fabric, but cotton voile and fine cotton lawn are translucent. Pale colored voile which is unprinted is especially revealing. The delicacy of cotton lawn makes it ideal for undergarments. It is difficult to beat cotton lawn as a nightgown fabric – it’s translucency gives a nightgown a very light luxurious and romantic feel.

A delicate fabric, tulle is sometimes used by brides to make their wedding veils. It was very fashionable in the 1920’s and thirties and was sometimes used in multiple layers to made negligees and frills on the matching nightgowns. Silk tulle is very luxurious and available in a great many colors. Super transparent, tulle edges don’t usually fray and so you may find them unfinished.

Most transparent nightgowns are made from chiffon. Silk chiffon is the softest, most transparent and luxurious. Polyester chiffon is less transparent but more practical as it can be machine washed and is mostly non iron. A certainly wont want to answer your front door in a chiffon nightgown as a single layer of chiffon is very revealing. Chiffon edges are usually finished, and usually using a double seam, one reason why chiffon garments are often more expensive.

The addition of hand painting or printing to a chiffon can make the transparency a little more subtle without spoiling the soft, sexy, drapeyness of the fabric. The best effect comes from hand-painted silk chiffon; wonderfully sensuous and delightfully subtle it oozes sex-appeal especially in animal print designs which are so very different from the more common printed satins. Printed chiffon is also ideal for nightgowns. Depending on the design it can vary from transparent to almost completely opaque, but still soft and feminine.

Georgette is slightly more opaque than chiffon, and double georgette more opaque than that. Ideally it provides the merest glimpse of the body beneath the nightgown. Silk double georgette feels fantastic. If your aim is to tantalise and tease, this is the fabric for you.

Organza isn’t often used to make nightgowns. Organza works well as long as it is chosen for the right sort of design. It does not have the softness of chiffon, but can still produce excellent results.

Sex appeal should be subtle according to most women. For this reason printed silks, cotton lawn and georgette are the best fabrics to choose.

There are some times in life when sleepwear really doesn’t matter; there are others when only  perfect, luxurious sleepwear will do, but what is  perfect sleepwear, and how do you find it?

Well of course ideas of perfection vary from person to person, but in general an item is perfect when it is well suited to it’s purpose, and that will depend on what you want your sleepwear for, is it for sleeping in, or for something else?

• If you want to lounge comfortably in the evening, pajamas are the best. Elasticated waists and wide legs make them easy and comfortable to wear, while a top which fits well across the bust and drapes well is both comfortable and alluring. Add only a little glitz and your pajamas can go anywhere.
• If you want to relax by the pool in the morning, and maybe not get dressed till lunch, a leisure dress makes great holiday wear.  Choose one that’s light but crease resistant, perhaps in a light jersey.
• If you actually want to sleep, a silk nightgown helps keep you warm or cool. In cold weather choose a design with sleeves. Why silk? As a natural fiber silk ‘breathes’ with you and is far more friendly to women who may over heat, while also feeling wonderful against the skin.

Most men agree that women in pajamas or T shirts don’t have quite the appeal of a silk or chiffon clad siren, so if your aim is to appeal to the opposite sex a soft, short silk chiffon chemise which gives a hint of the body beneath may be just what you need.
• If you want to go to bed feeling fabulously feminine, a full length silk nightgown and matching robe is the only way to go. The sensuous qualities of the fabric plus the colors available make this the obvious choice.

Recent changes in fashion mean that clothing once only considered suitable as sleepwear is now in daily use. Camisole tops, bustiers and corsets have ‘made it’ into the mainstream wardrobe. Pajamas made the transition from bedroom to evening wear back in the 1920’s. Only the robe, now a sad towelling or velour shadow of it’s former, grander self has become less than it once was, when every lady wore her ‘dressing gown’ throughout the early part of the morning.

Good quality sleepwear is no longer something reserved for the nighttime. Like every item in your wardrobe, view your sleepwear as an investment and think about the many different ways it could be worn and hence the number of times you are likely to wear it in a year.

The South Korean government has just pledged around $8.7 million in funding for a new classroom program.

New robotic teaching assistants, or R-Leaning, will be heading to the classroom after just a few months of trials.  The program will be available in 500 preschools across the country to start.  Parents will be able to actually hook-up to R-Learning to monitor their children and see how the robotic teaching is working in the classroom.
